The significantly declining general happiness level in America
Happiness is the goal of life but sadly according to significant research for several decades the happiness level in America has been declining significantly and is continuing to decline. This decline in happiness has been affecting people across all walks of society. In recent years the US has dropped eight points in the United Nations International Happiness Survey. In addition one reliable long term study found that Americans are significantly less happy today than they were fifty years ago. This decline in happiness includes: -a significant decline in our general level of happiness and life satisfaction -a 50% decline in the number of people who consider themselves to be "very happy". in the last ten years -a 50% divorce rate with second marriages doing even worse -a major decline in happiness in people under the age of 30 -a decline in the quality of family life -a significant decline in the quality of our social connections and an increase in loneliness even in metropolitan areas partially due to the excessive use of "screen time" and other causes -a major depression and/or anxiety epidemic -the fact that most people do not really enjoy their jobs and many are working longer hours -increased stress caused by increased financial pressures and lack of financial well being training and wealth building skills -stress caused by our domestic politics and the state of the world -and more​​
Happiness myths we have been taught that just don't work
One significant reason why the happiness level in America has decreased so much is the existence of quite a number of happiness myths that we have been taught in our society. Happiness myths are beliefs about happiness- about what it is and how to increase and sustain it that significant research has found just do not work or do not give us the sustainable happiness that we have been taught to believe that they do when we achieve them. They include both things we were taught to believe would give us lasting and sustainable happiness that don't and things we were taught would make us sustainably unhappy that don't as well. In our program we will identify the major happiness myths that significant research has found exist in our society as well as look at the beliefs, attitudes and actions that Positive Psychology has found actually do create, increase and sustain "meaningful and authentic happiness" or living with joy and teach you how to make these things part of your life day by day increasingly. Again these are not difficult concepts or actions. They are basic but profound core beliefs, attitude and actions anyone can understand and apply in their lives day by day as we will teach you and really change their lives.
How our schools have failed us
The lack of any significant happiness, motivation and empowerment training in all our years in school
We spend a lot of time in school- statistically about 18-21 percent of our lives. But throughout our entire school experience in the vast majority of schools the education we get focuses almost solely on academics and career skills. While academic subjects and career skills are very important of course the schools have not really taught us the essential principles, beliefs, attitudes and actions that we need to know to become our best and happiest selves and create our best and happiest lives in every area of our lives throughout our lives. They have not taught us the essential beliefs, attitudes and actions that actually enable us to experience increasing happiness and well being, motivation and self-empowerment in life. To say that these things are at least as important as academics and early career skills is an understatement especially in a society where the happiness level is decreasing significantly especially among our youth- teens and people under 30. In this sense our schools have really failed us. In the relatively small number of schools where these things are taught every day as part of the core curriculum the results have been tremendous even with traditionally underperforming students. Happier students have more confidence and self belief. They set higher goals in school and life and work harder to achieve them. They get along better with others and work better with others. They bounce back from falling short and failing faster and more determined to win. They are more active in helping others, engaging in acts of kindness and community service and much more. They also go on to create higher levels of happiness and success in life. These are all learned skills that we need to focus on on our schools as part of the daily core curriculum

Besides the general decline in happiness in America and many other countries in the world a reliable long term study has found that the number of people who have achieved a high level of happiness and consider themselves to be "very happy" in America has declined by 50% in the last ten years. So even if you consider yourself to be "happy, motivated and effective" in life it is getting harder and harder to stay there.
